Fairy Tale Ending
Most girls dream of marrying a prince when they grow up. Few girls actually get to do it. Meghan Markle is one of those lucky girls who will actually get to live out a childhood fantasy when she walks down the aisle with Prince Harry on May 19th next year. Her hair will be perfectly done. Her gown will be immaculately designed. The whole world will be watching as she says, “I do,” and lives happily ever after.
But Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are a set of rebels and DGAF about royal tradition. Their wedding will be unconventional in almost every way possible, according to royal standards that is. Here are some of the ways Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are sticking it to centuries of tradition.
The last member of the Royal family to wed an American was Prince Harry’s great-grand Uncle King Edward. And that didn’t turn out so well. King Edward had to abdicate the throneafter his marriage to American Wallis Simpson. When it happened, the world was scandalized by a royal marrying an American. Less than a century later, the world is all “Whatevs.”
Much like King Edward’s forbidden fruit, Wallis Simpson, Markle is also a divorcee. Markle was married to producer Trevor Engelson, but split with him in 2013. Come to think of it, maybe Prince Harry isn’t breaking from tradition after all? Maybe having a thing for American divorcees just runs in the family?
While there’s no rule that says all royals must be as pale as a sheet of paper, the royal family has been white AF for literally ever. Markle’s mother, Dora, is African-American.
Religion is a big issue in any relationship. But it’s a bigger issue when your family is the head of the Church of England. Markle grew up going to Catholic school. Markle will be baptized into the Church of England before their wedding because, “in order to remain in the line of succession, members of the royal family cannot be Catholic.” Damn!
They’re Going To Have A Banana Cake
It’s rumored that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are going to have a banana-flavored cake at their wedding. Okay, so a banana-flavored wedding cake breaks regular tradition, not just royal tradition. While it’s tradition to have a multi-tiered fruitcake at royal weddings, bananas are out of the box. According to former royal chef Darren McGrady, it’s one of Prince Harry’s favorite flavors.
They’re Getting Married On A Saturday
Royal weddings are normally held on a weekday. But those rule-breakers Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are going to have their wedding on a (gasp!) Saturday. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip? Wed on Thursday. Prince Charles and Princess Diane? Wed on a Wednesday. Not Prince Harry, though! He’s waiting until the weekend.
Their Wedding Date Is Unconventional
Even the day itself is going to break tradition, because these two do nothing by the books. The two are tying the knot on May 19th, which is also the day of one of Britain’s most prestigious soccer cups, the Emirates FA Final Cup. Prince William, aka the president of the Football Association, normally presents the winner with the cup. We’re guessing he won’t be there to do that this year, though. Just a hunch!
She’s Talked About Her Relationship In Magazines
The first rule about being in a relationship with a royal? Don’t talk about being in a relationship with a royal. But Markle threw that to the wind when she dished about her relationship with Prince Harry pre-engagement to Vanity Fair. “We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” said Markle. In love with not following royal protocol apparently!
They Hold Hands
Uh, aren’t people in love supposed to hold hands? Not if you’re a royal! You’re literally not allowed to hold hands with the person you’re married to. That’s why Prince William and Kate Middleton are never seen touching in public. But Prince Harry and Megan Markle hold hands all over the place, which is pretty much the royal equivalent of a hot and heavy make out sesh.
She Has An All-Diamond Ring
Okay, so there’s no rule that reads, “Simon says a royal can’t have a diamond engagement ring.” But the royals have pretty much gravitated to gem stones when it comes to their matrimonial jewelry. The Queen Mother, Princess Anne, Princess Diana all had sapphires in their engagement or wedding rings. And since Kate Middleton has the same ring as Princess Diana, she does, too. Princess Margaret and Sarah Ferguson both had ruby rings.
She’s Spending Christmas With The Royal Family
Most people spend the holidays with their in-laws-to-be… unless you’re a royal-to-be. In that case, it’s against protocol… unless your Meghan Markle. In that case, you do whatever the hell you want. Markle is set to spend the holidays with Prince Harry’s family (including the Queen). Because why start following tradition now?
Rules Are Made To Be Broken
Being a royal must be better without having to follow all those stuffy rules. We’re kind of jealous of Meghan Markle, and not just because she’s marrying Prince Harry. She’s getting the best of both worlds!
